Carrie is a good book, not great, but good and worth a read. It is a difficult one to review as I have seen the film on a number of occasions and already had images in my head that restricts the imagination whilst reading.
The reason I put this down as a good and not great was I found it a bit of a jerky read. King introduces a number of reference articles from newspaper, scientific and biographic extracts from organisations and characters in the story. This part I found distracting. One minute you are reading the story and it is building nicely with great rhythm of writing that I was enjoying and getting into and then it would stop and I would have to read an article about telekinesis (TK) or something else.
There are strong parts that come across well such as the mother (mama) with her extreme religious views and sins of flesh that build for a good understanding of Carrie’s character and other characters in the book are portrayed well and are believable. One thing I did find awkward was the use of the word ‘suddenly’ used repeatedly, ‘suddenly’ adds little or nothing to tension in a story and from such a great writer I was a little surprised for this to appear so often. Maybe when editing the book they got a little bored.
Overall, a great story so I would recommend to be added to the bookshelf.
